Five travel tips for planning a vacation in Tobago

Located just seven miles off the coast of Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago are two tropical paradise islands that make for perfect holiday destinations. Tobago is the smaller of the two islands and has beaches sprawled across miles of pristine coastlines. Seeing as it is located at the intersection of the Caribbean Sea, Atlantic Ocean and River Orinoco, Tobago has a rich and diverse marine life that is otherwise unseen and unheard of.

So, if you are planning a vacation to the island of Tobago, then these five travel tips are certainly going to come in handy. Let’s take a look.

Vacation to the island of Tobago

1. Time your travel: Tobago has two seasons, wet and dry, and when it rains it pours. So, if you are someone who wants to enjoy the tropical rains in the island of Tobago, then this is the perfect time for you to hit the island. The dry season is from December to May while it rains through the rest of the year. The dry season enjoys a lovely tropical weather and the world-famous carnivals take place during this time.

Dry season experiences a higher influx of tourists making accommodation and travel more expensive and is not suitable for travellers on a tight budget. Things are much cheaper during the wet season. Bear in mind that most water sport activities are suspended during the wet months, so if you are visiting the island to enjoy the thrill of deep sea diving, then plan a trip during the dry months.

Although Tobago isn’t quite affected by hurricanes like many other Caribbean islands, it is considered wise to prepare for heavy showers if you go during the monsoon.

2. Itinerary: There is more than a lot to do on the island of Tobago, so, if you are taking a short trip to the island, an itinerary will help. Make a check list of the places you would like to visit and work out your means of transportation around it.

3. Clothing: Make sure you carry lots of comfortable clothes along with your beach and resort wear. Carry comfortable footwear If you plan to hit the hiking trails. Note that it is against the law to wear camouflaged clothing in the island as this is strictly reserved for the military. Another good item to carry is mosquito and insect repellent.

You will also need to reserve a small amount of money for internal travel and cruises if that is something you enjoy.

The local currency is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar also known as TTD (currency code), however, most local merchants accept American dollars and cards. You will also need money for the sporting activities that many people engage in.
